We had a two night stopover in Thompson Springs, UT on our way to Moab. We really thought we were just going to hang out at the campground, but 2 things happened: 1) it was raining and we wanted to get out of the rig and 2) the campground host gave us a map to explore the Thompson and Sego canyons. Exploring this little town was a pleasant surprise!
We drove into Thompson Canyon.
The boulders that fell from the top of the canyon were huge!
We stopped at the 100 year old petroglyphs put there by the Native American Ute tribe.
There were more associated with the Fremont tribe. These are thought to be about 300 years old.
This last group of pictographs are thought to belong to the Ancient Puebloans and area over 1000 years old. The red dye makes these very interesting.
The Sego Canyon has a ghost town that used to be the home of coal miners. This was their company store. Just a brick shell now.
There were a few homes built into the cliffs. And this is a Dutch Oven!
Back in the very small town of Thompson, we saw the schoolhouse built in 1907. It looks like it is used for some type of municipal storage now.
And this, ladies and gentlemen, is the cafe from the movie Thelma and Louise. It has fallen into disrepair inside, but the brick is holding up. This move will make another appearance in a future blog!
