Desert Oasis

Last day in Phoenix
Heading South!

Johnny and I did a couple of hikes, in addition to the Papago Park Hole in the Rock and nature walk, over the last couple of weeks.  We waited for days that were sunny and warm to venture out!

First, we went back up to Black Canyon City to hike part of the 27 mile trail there.
The trail started like many others we had hiked in Arizona.
Hiking and biking, as well as horse back riding, is allowed on this trail.  The trails in the Phoenix area are very well marked.
The day was sunny so the scenery looked spectacular.

There were a lot of gates like this one along the way - trying to keep cattle (which we heard) off the trail.
We saw these beautiful rocks that we think looked like quartz.

The trail got a bit rocky and went around a mountain.

When we saw the Cottonwood trees we were hoping we could hike down there.
The trail indeed led us down the mountain.
And right to the Agua Fria River - an oasis along the Black Canyon Trail.  So pretty.

Later in the week we went to Cave Creek and hiked part of  the 315 mile Maricopa Trail.  The Maricopa Trail connects municipal parks around the Phoenix area.
The trail is basically a loop around the urban areas with 4 spurs that connect it to mountain parks.  We hiked the Spur Cross Trail at the conservation area.
The trail was similar to other trails we have done in Phoenix, but still very pretty.
More beautiful desert scenery.

And we even enjoyed looking down the trail .
This trail got rocky too.
We crossed Cave Creek several times.

I loved this shot of the creek with the saguaros and Cottonwood trees.
This part of the Creek looked great in the sun.  Another oasis.
Check out this crazy looking saguaro!
