Wandering around the Sonoran Desert

Still hanging out in Phoenix!
Heading to Texas next by way of Tucson

Note: I thought this post uploaded on Friday!

It's still unusually cold here (same temp at night as it is in Chicago!) and I am hoping to do some more hiking before we leave Phoenix.  In the meantime, I realized we did a couple of hikes that I never included in the blog.  Oh no!

3 weeks ago we drove about 10 minutes to the Phoenix Sonoran Preserve.  There are several different trails here - we did a relatively flat 2 mile hike starting from the Desert Vista Trailhead.
The desert landscape was really beautiful.

I was taken by the expanse of cholla all around us.

Not to mention the huge saguaros!

The distant mountains were cool too.
We're heading up to this trail.  It looked more ominous at the time.
Made it!
We were rewarded with this flowering cactus.
And a treat!

I know, the one with the pretzels looks weird.  But it was good.
Then a couple of weekends ago we went to Lake Pleasant just 20 minutes from Pioneer RV Park.
Lake Pleasant is actually a manmade reservoir.  Water is pumped from the Colorado River near Lake Havasu into an aqueduct near Phoenix and then to the lake.  The water is stored in the reservoir until it's needed in the summer.
Lake Pleasant is used for water recreation all year.

We decided to take a quick hike right along the lake.

Along the trail there is a historical Hohokam Indian hilltop lookout.
Great view from the lookout!
This section of the trail was rock - and bleached when it's covered by water.
I like the view from the water's edge too.
On our way back to the trailhead we saw this sailboat.  So peaceful.
We went to the floating restaurant  - Scorpion Bay.  It was a long walk down (and back up)!
Lunch right on the water with the ducks!
